The most important reason for the growth of mold in buildings is increased humidity. If the relative humidity is over 65% for a long time, this can lead to mold growth. But not all moisture is the same: it can occur in different ways in the house or it can also penetrate from the outside. These include leaky pipes, damaged roofs, defective component connections and leaking masonry due to a lack of external sealing. Renovation MS80 W reliably prevents the penetration of driving rain and aggressive components in the atmosphere. The product is applied to the wall from the outside and acts as a facade waterproofing or impregnation, so that water is not absorbed by the wall and instead rolls off. In addition, BOTAMENT MS 80 W helps to keep the wall dry and thus to preserve the thermal insulation and also reduces efflorescence. The water vapor permeability of the facade construction is not affected by the impregnation. RD1 Universal is a one-component, quick-setting reactive waterproofing for waterproofing components in contact with the ground in new buildings and for the renovation of old waterproofing. The product, which has European Technical Assessment (ETA-18/0327) as a flexible polymer modified thick coating, is ready to use and does not require a primer. In addition, RD1 is highly flexible and crack-bridging, and partial amounts can also be easily removed. Renovation MS10 is a ready-to-use injection cream for horizontal sealing as subsequent protection against rising damp in the masonry. Mould caused by moisture

Mold is present when microorganisms have multiplied on or in a material. The most important prerequisite for this is sufficiently high humidity. According to the guidelines of the Federal Environment Agency “For the prevention, recording and remediation of mold infestation in buildings”, the humidity limit below which no growth of mold on materials takes place is around 70% relative humidity on the surface. But with increasing material moisture, the probability of mold growth increases. At around 80% relative humidity on the surface and with a sufficiently high surface temperature, ideal growth conditions are achieved for a large number of mold types. If the surface moisture is even higher, almost all types of mold and bacteria can grow. The moisture content on a material surface is often described by the so-called water activity (aw value): an aw value of 0.7 corresponds to about 70% relative humidity on the material surface, i.e. a numerical value of the relative percentage air humidity on the outer and inner material surface divided by 100.

Focus on driving rain protection

Driving rain – defined as rain that hits a vertical wall under the influence of wind – moisture can penetrate the outer walls into the building if they are not adequately protected against the ingress of rainwater. Typical cases of damage are leaking connection joints, for example on the window, or leaks in the roof area. Rising and laterally penetrating moisture can occur through masonry, foundations and basement walls that are insufficiently sealed against the ground.
