Bathroom renovation de luxe - A case for Botament's ETAG-certified wet room systems

In the course of the extensive renovation of 70 deluxe rooms and suites at the van der Valk Hotel Berlin Brandenburg, special attention was paid to the bathroom fittings. When choosing the floor-level shower system, the hotel management, hotel director Jan Polman decided on the wet room system from BOTAMENT due to the ETAG-certified complete range.

The van der Valk Hotel Berlin Brandenburg is a certified business hotel of the four-star category in the south of the German capital. It has 257 double rooms, 3 family rooms and 6 suites spread over two wings of the building. After the last complete renovation was already about 20 years ago, the hotel management decided in 2016 to modernize the complex in several stages. The first step was to create timeless deluxe rooms in the north wing of the house.

Particular emphasis was placed on the refurbishment of the bathrooms. Their walls were originally tiled white. moreover, each bathroom had only one bathtub in which you could shower behind a curtain. Thus, neither their appearance nor their furnishings corresponded to the spirit of the times and the increased demands of the guests.

Particularly in the hotel sector, a lot has happened in bathroom design in recent years. Bathrooms have long since ceased to be simply utilitarian spaces, but rather comfortable and luxurious oases of well-being that have become a major selling point for hotel operators. After all, an ideally equipped, modern bathroom is for many guests the most important experience of their stay even directly after the quality of the bed. And so they often expect to experience more and better comfort in the hotel bathroom than at home.

Internationally, too, the trend in fittings in this context is towards dispensing with the bathtub in order to be able to install a floor-level walk-in shower instead. A major topic in which Botament has long since made a name for itself as one of the leading German manufacturers of systems for waterproofing damp and wet rooms to the very highest quality.
For equipping the bathrooms in the van der Valk Hotel Berlin Brandenburg, the project management opted for Botament shower boards, which combine attractive design with high-performance functionality and individually adaptable installation. Botament LD shower boards with a 2-sided slope and a reversible stainless steel cover were installed. The top of the cover was completely tiled as requested.

As the shower boards are already provided with a seal at the factory, the SB78 transversely elastic system sealing tapes with fleece covering on both sides were used to seal the butt joints in the shower board/wall connection area. All other necessary waterproofing work was also carried out using Botament products. The contractors used Botament DF9 R, the crack-bridging composite waterproofing under tile coverings in the interior, for the walls and the highly crack-bridging waterproofing slurry Botament MD1 Speed for the floor areas adjacent to the shower board, which can be covered with tiles just four hours after application.

Two Botament products were also used for the bonding of the tiles themselves: M21 Classic for the walls and M29 HP for the floors. The customer’s wish to have matching anthracite-coloured joints created to match the dark floor tiles proved to be a challenge. Due to the often very aggressive cleaning agents used in hotels, experience has shown that the use of cement-based grout can quickly lead to light discolouration or decomposition of the grout surface. But Botament also has a suitable solution for this special area of application: Multifuge Diamond is a multifunctional 2K reaction resin grout for wall and floor coverings. The revolutionary colour fastness of the material makes it particularly suitable for demanding flooring materials where all aspects of design are important.

The site manager Jens Heinrich, who was appointed by the management of the van der Valk Hotel Berlin Brandenburg, was highly satisfied with the completion of the work in March 2018 by the locally commissioned Luchmann Sanitär GmbH and the tiling company Ortwig. The hotel management was also very pleased with the result of the bathroom renovation. The next stage of renovation is therefore already planned for 2019 with the refurbishment of the west wing to the same extent. Again, of course, with the perfect wet room systems from Botament: safe, ETAG-certified – and all from a single source.

The guidelines laid down in the “European Technical Approval Guidelines” are the basis of a Europe-wide uniform, independent test procedure for the evaluation of performance characteristics of a construction product, in particular for complete systems. ETAG is thus the European equivalent of the building authority approval issued by the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt).
The name Botament has been synonymous with professional-quality system building materials since 1988 and has become an established name in the construction industry. The Bottrop-based company currently produces at six locations in Europe. As a sister company of MC-Bauchemie, Botament GmbH & Co KG makes use of the entire development know-how of the MC Group, in which a good 180 employees are dedicated exclusively to research and development, and distributes construction chemical product systems throughout Europe.
